after intermission

Saturday night after my show was done, I drove over to the theatre where a good friend of mine was performing to wait for her to be done, so we could go see Freak House (which we never got into by the way, but I hear it is loads of fun).

While waiting in the lobby I sat and listened to the sound of the show. It is an undeniable hum, muffled electricity. The crazy thing is that no matter what the show, it always has the same sound in the lobby. The sound of waiting, holding your breath. All this action goes on in the theatre and in the lobby there is this stasis. I love this sound. It is so comforting and energized. I was so content sitting there in the hush, taking a break from the whirlwind.

Lovely.

Smaller: Oh it's bras.

Smallest: Oh man, the boobie store.

world two

(Switzerland and Denmark are laying on a hill behind the school, looking at the sky. They have just finished another joint.)

Switzerland: Noooo waaay. Do you see that one.

Denmark: Totally. It is totally, totally a...

Switzerland: A what?

Denmark: You know.

Switzerland: So say it.

Denmark: No you say it.

(pause)

Switzerland: Let's say it together.

Denmark: Yeah, together.

Switzerland: Ready, set/

Denmark: It's a kiwi.

Switzerland: I never said go.

Denmark: Ohhh, sorry man. Let's do it again.

Switzerland: Ok. Ready...wait.

Denmark: What?

Switzerland: You already said it.

Denmark: Said what?

Switzerland: (Starts laughing) What? I have no idea.

(Britain and France appear. They start to make out, not realizing the others are there.)

Denmark: Holy shit, look at that.

Switzerland: (still looking at sky) Totally a bison.

Denmark: Bison are awesome.

Switzerland: Awesome.

Denmark: Now look at Britain and France.

Switzerland: (They watch for a minute and then calls out) Good times man. Good times.

(Britain and France look up. Britain races over to them and France slowly follows.)

Britain: You guys never saw that, ok?

Switzerland: Saw what?

Denmark: The bison?

Britain: What?

Denmark: Bison are awesome.

Britain: You guys are idiots/

Switzerland: Woah, Denmark did you hear that?

Denmark: I believe I did Switzerland. I believe I heard that I was an idiot.

Switzerland: Would an idiot be able to comprehend the shit Britain would be in if USA found out about Britain's tongue being inside France's mouth?

Denmark: Or have the imagination to delineate the form of a near extinct mammal in a fair weather cumulus?

Switzerland: No man, I don't think they could.

Denmark: But I can, you?

Switzerland: Totally.

Britain: Ok, I'm sorry. What will it take to keep you two quiet.

(France joins them.)

Switzerland: Woah, we could give a shit who is making out with who.

Denmark: Yeah dude, love is love...

Britain: Wow, that is really decent of you.

Denmark: France you wanna stay and hang out?

Switzerland: You totally should.

Britain: No, we should go.

France: You can go Britain, I think I will hang here a while.

Britain: What?

France: See you later ok?

(Britain slowly leaves as France lays down between the two guys.)

to be continued...

Leaving rehearsal last Wednesday, very late, it happened. Back alley.

flooding

I have not been posting much mainly because I have no creative juices left. I have been dejuiced. I can never understand why the 'when it rains it pours' maxim has to be true. I hate to double up on shows (rehearsing one while performing another). But I did just that. The first one finished this past weekend, but now I am tired and cranky and begging for my next show to open because then at least I can have a couple nights a week off. It also happens that three of my design clients need something asap, and I as always need the money. So between design and stage I am fraying quickly. I am thankful for all the work, but seriously, why does it always hit at the same time? Watch my show close and then me not book anything for months. I already know it will happen. So, so cliche.

Drought, downpour, drought downpour.

Oh...and this just sucks.

frahhh day

This is a very depressing Friday.

First I see that Mark Warner is dropping out before he begins.

and then I get an email about a dance party with Jenny Lewis and I have a show at that time. I really want to go to this one with the smallers. Absolute bummer.

sitting in the dark

Things I would like to go see, but probably wont get the chance to because of rehearsal and performance schedule.

The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui

The Bluest Eye

Get Your War On

The Gingham Dog

and

I missed Help Wanted for the same reasons.

UPDATE: How dare I forget. Watching a fun show about a crazy nun who kills her baby always makes for light hearted entertainment!

ratty little race

Allen and Webb went for the jugular as much as possible yesterday.

I am normally very invested in the election process. I will, at length, discuss the candidates with anyone who is interested. I have, however, run on my least favorite problem in this election. I don't really like Webb.

If you visit his website you can see why. His thoughts on education are pat, he completely bypasses issues like same sex marriage, discrimination, and abortion. He, in essence, is mute on any issues that lean too far to the left. I did not vote for him in the primary, I went with Miller, even though I was not jumping for joy over him either. I voted for the lesser of two evils the first time, so what the hell am I doing now? Voting for the conservative in democratic clothing? Yes, I am still going to vote for Webb, but he has done nothing to impress me at all.

He is lucky I detest Allen.

I pray the presidential election offers me someone who I can be inspired by. Obama? Warner?

world one there may be more

The World
...as a bad teen angst drama.

Curtain opens

USA enters, she is wearing something gaudy and overtly brand named. She is surrounded by Britain and Israel, Mexico follows.

USA: Did you guys see how Japan was wearing an outfit like mine yesterday. I mean, please, like she could ever fill it out like I could.

Israel: Shut the fuck up and give me $5.

USA: What the hell for?

Israel: Like I am going to tell you bitch.

USA: I am not giving it to you if you talk to me like that.

Israel: Yes you are, or do I have to bring up the crap that happened in middle school and how I still have a scar on my thigh. Plus, you need me. Do I need to remind you why/

USA: Fine, here (hands her the money), but you don't have to be so pushy.

Israel: Whatever.

Israel leaves.

Britain: So are we still on for tonight?

USA: I have to think about it.

Britain: What do you mean think about it? Who the hell else are you going to date?

USA: I am the most sought after girl in school, I could get anyone.

Britain: I have done everything you wanted. I even painted my toenails like yours.

USA: Ha. Ha. That was awesome. Mexico, did you know I made him do that?

Mexico: That is so funn/

USA: Shut up. I don't know why I let you be here.

Mexico: Well I live next door to yo/

USA: Shut up.

Mexico: Oka/

USA: I said shut up. And hold my caramel macchiato.

Britain: So about tonight.

USA: Oh my God Britain can you just chill for even one second. (Begins to fake cry) I have a lot on my mind right now. You know I am dealing with some major things and what I need now is for you to give me a little understanding. Everybody wants to be just like me. Do you know how much pressure that is? I am a very important person, pretty much more important than anyone else here. Do you know how hard that is for me? And I am on the rag.

Britain: It seems like you are always on the rag.

USA: Shut the hell up. I just have an unusually long menstrual cycle.

France walks by, she is wearing something incredibly sexy that should not be allowed in high school.

France: Hey Britain, I had a great time at study group with you yesterday.

Britain: Yeah me too. You sure have interesting study methods.

France: Maybe we could do it again.

Britain: Doing it again sounds great.

Germany enters. Says to France

Germany: Hey babe. What's up?

France: Not much.

Germany: Hungry?

France: Starving.

Germany looks to USA and Britain.

Germany:
Later.

USA turns to Britain.

USA: What the fuck was that?

Britain: Nothing, France and I were just doing some homework yesterday.

USA: France and you, France and you?! What about our date tonight?

Britain:
But you said/

USA: I know what I said. You will be sorry about this. Just remember what happened when Iraq wouldn't join the SGA. Don't mess with me.

Britain: I know I just/

USA: Shut up!

Britain: I'm sorry, look lets talk about this later.

USA: Oh we'll talk alright.

The bell rings for class, everyone leaves, and Mexico is still standing holding the drink.

USA: (from offstage) Mexico, where the hell is my macchiato!

Mexico spits into USA's drink, smiles, then follows her off stage.

The saga may continue...

rewrites

Small: I don't like the end.

Me: What part don't you like?

Small: Why doesn't the king take the cup of poison away from the queen?

Me: He does not see that she is going to drink it.

Small: Yes he does, he sees her doing it.

Me: How would you have it happen?

Small: I would have it happen that the king runs over to her and stops her.

Me: But he doesn't want anyone to know that he poisoned it, and that might give it away.

Small: Whatever, at least he could run over and smack it out of her hand and say that drinking too much alcohol is bad for you. That would have kept his secret.

Me: You're right. I can't believe Shakespeare never thought of that.
