I waited until after school yesterday to break the news. They knew something was wrong because we were on the phone all night on Monday. The impossibility of an adult trying to comprehend senseless death is nothing compared to a smaller trying to figure out cause and effect in this world. The first question was asked repeatedly for the rest of the night.
Smaller: Why did he shoot her?
Me: We don't know why.
Small: Was he trying to shoot her?
Me: It seems he was shooting anyone he saw.
Smaller: Are we ever going to get shot?
Me: No. Absolutely not. (Hoping that this is the truth.)
Smallest: Is she dead?
Me: Yes. She is.
Small: Do her Mom and Dad know?
Me: Yes.
Smaller: Are they very sad?
Me: Yes.
Smallest: Is she dead forever?
Me: Yes, sweetie.
Small: Why did he shoot all of those people?
Me: No one knows. Everyone is asking that question.
Smallest: Will she still be dead on Saturday?
Small: Yes, Smallest. Saturday is part of forever.
